What Is Respondus Lockdown?

LockDown Browser is a locked browser for use with tests in Blackboard. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. If a Blackboard test requires that LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser. LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Blackboard tests. It should not be used in other areas of Blackboard.

Once Respondus LockDown Browser is downloaded and installed on your computer, you will start the program (using it as your web browser) in order to log-in to Blackboard and take your exams. Make sure that no other programs are running on your computer when you start the browser.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a special Web browser for testing online or in the classroom. Exams that require Respondus LockDown Browser will typically be marked as "Requires Respondus LockDown Browser" and students should download and install this software on their computer at home in order to take their exams. Not all exams require Respondus LockDown Browser, so it is important to check with your instructor about these requirements.

Respondus LockDown Monitor is a separate tool included with your LockDown Browser that is used for added security in online testing. There is no cost for students to use either program; however, students will need a webcam for Respondus Monitor. You will know if your exam requires webcam if you look at the title of the exam and see "***Webcam***" in the name of the test. However, if you are not sure if your test requires a webcam, you should refer to your course syllabus and contact your instructor.

If it is your first time using Respondus LockDown Browser or if you have not done so already, it is important that you update the browser and run a system check.
