Tips and Ideas for a Better Headshot
- It is always good to wear neutral colors.
- Bright colors like pink, red, etc. may reflect back on your skin under the lights.
- Try to pick solid colors or very simple patterns (examples 1, 5, & 8).
- Heavy patterns can distort or be a distraction. If you have one you just love to wear, we can try it, but bring a backup.
- Adding contrasting layers adds depth in professional photos.
- This is most commonly done with clothing (examples 6, 7, 8, & 12)
- This can also be done with ties and jewelry (examples 1, 5, & 11)
- You can also use trade specific instruments (example 9)
- If possible, wear tighter or form fitting clothing.
- Baggy of loose clothes tend to make the subject appear wider and have a more unnatural/unflattering look in closer framed photos.
- Wear what makes you comfortable, even if it may break a rule or two.
- Bring at least one backup just in case their first choice doesn't work with the background.
