What is Open Source Software?

Open Source Software (OSS) is software whose code has been made available to anyone for use, modification, and/or enhancement. This type of software is usually created in collaboration between a number of individuals that then share their code with others who use and make changes to it, continuing the cycle of sharing their changes with the world. The intent is to improve software faster than it might otherwise be improved upon by commercial entities, allowing space for innovations and the sharing of those innovations with the public. The majority of open source software is free or low cost.
